In response to claims in the Honolulu Civil Beat that support from CHC BOLD PAC makes Patrick Pihana Branco beholden to “special interests”, Chairman Ruben Gallego released the following statement:


“Implying that BOLD PAC is aligned with ‘special interests’ that operate in the shadows is a gross mischaracterization of the work we do. Our mission is to ensure that Congress reflects the diversity of our entire country and not just certain parts of it. So let me set the record straight: ensuring that Latinos and other communities of color have a seat at the table is a battle BOLD PAC has fought, proudly, for more than two decades and it’s one we will continue to fight for decades to come.


Latinos are the largest minority group in the United States, and tens of thousands of Latinos call Hawaiʻi’s 2nd congressional district home. Our community and our values deserve to be fully represented. That’s why BOLD PAC has stood firmly behind Patrick Pihana Branco and his historic campaign to be the first Latino ever and the third Native Hawaiian since statehood to represent Hawaiʻi in Congress. To suggest that BOLD PAC’s support would make Patrick, or any Latino candidate, beholden to some obscure ‘special interest’ begs the question: what’s wrong with fighting for the Latino community?”


PATRICK PIHANA BRANCO AND HAWAIʻI’S SECOND DISTRICT


Patrick Pihana Branco is the State Representative for House District 50 (Kailua and Kāne‘ohe Bay). He was born and raised in Kailua, and spent his summers working on his great-grandfather’s farm on Hawaiʻi Island. He is a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools, Hawai’i Pacific University, and Johns Hopkins University. Drawn to public service, Patrick joined the U.S. Foreign Service as a Diplomat in 2012. He served tours in Colombia, Pakistan, Venezuela, the Office of the Special Representative for Afghanistan, and in the Secretary of State’s Operations Center. In the State Legislature, Patrick authored the bill which banned the possession of ghost guns in Hawaiʻi, and the resolution to have the State of Hawaiʻi formally apologize for its 90-year ban of the Hawaiian language in Hawaiʻi's public schools.


Hawaiʻi’s newly drawn second district is one of the most diverse districts in the country. It is a majority minority district and home to many diverse communities, including those who identify as Native Hawaiian, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Hispanic. Over 82,000 of its residents identify as Hispanic, which accounts for 11.3% of the population of the district.

The Committee for Hispanic Causes Building Our Leadership Diversity PAC (CHC BOLD PAC) is the campaign arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. It was founded in 2001. It is dedicated to electing Latinos and Latinas to Congress and is powered by thousands of donors from across the country. Over the past 21 years, BOLD PAC has doubled the size of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. 


While its core mission focuses on increasing diversity in Congress, BOLD PAC has also played an integral role in making and defending the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. Patrick Pihana Branco es el representante estatal del Distrito 50 de la Cámara (Kailua y Kāne'ohe Bay).
