A LEADER FOR NORTH CAROLINA
Deborah Ross was raised in a small town by hard working parents who instilled in her a commitment to public service at a young age.. After graduating from North Carolina at UNC Chapel Hill Law School, Ross became a civil rights lawyer and fought for cleaner energy practices and mentored students in communities across North Carolina. In 2002, Ross won a seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives, where she served North Carolinains for a decade. During her tenure in the state legislature, Ross passed legislation to protect voting rights, funded transportation projects, increased access to affordable housing, and also increased the state minimum wage. Ross was also instrumental in acquiring an earned income tax credit aimed at returning tax dollars for working families, supported raising the minimum wage, and sponsored paid sick leave legislation during the 2005 Recession. She also supported tax breaks to small businesses and passed legislation spurring economic development in North Carolina. Ross was elected by her peers to serve as both Majority and Minority Whip, and she also served as the Chair on the Judiciary, Ethics and Election Laws Committees.
Ross lives in Raleigh with her husband Steve and their dog Wylie.
