Matt is a member of the House Democratic leadership team as a co-chair of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC). He serves on the House Appropriations Committee as well as the Natural Resources Committee, where he is leading the fight in Congress to revitalize former coal communities like his own in Northeastern Pennsylvania and throughout the Appalachian region. Matt has a proven ability to work across the aisle to get things done for his constituents and our nation as a whole. In the last two Congresses, he introduced more legislation that was supported by both Democrats and Republicans than any other House Democrat. In 2019, the Center for Effective Lawmaking named him one of the most effective members of the U.S. House for his record of advancing real solutions to the biggest issues our nation faces. Before his election to Congress, Matt fought on behalf of everyday working families as a trial attorney with Munley, Munley & Cartwright. He graduated magna cum laude from Hamilton College in 1983 and earned his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1986, where he was a member of law review. Matt lives in Moosic with his wife, Marion, and they have two sons, Jack and Matthew.
