 CHC BOLD PAC Endorses Debbie Mucarsel-Powell in the Florida U.S. Senate Race


Washington D.C. -  As part of its commitment to expanding Latino representation in both the U.S. House and Senate, today CHC BOLD PAC is endorsing former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell in the Florida Senate race. CHC BOLD PAC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez released the following statement on the endorsement:


“As the first South American immigrant elected to the U.S. House, former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell has fought tirelessly for hard-working families. From working to expand Medicare, bringing jobs to Florida, and fighting for economic relief for families and small businesses, Debbie has always worked in the best interest of Florida’s working families,” said CHC BOLD PAC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez.


“Debbie knows what it means to work hard to pursue the American Dream. She immigrated from Ecuador at just 14 years old, and her mother worked double shifts as a home-health aide while Debbie paid her own way through school. At 24, she lost her father to gun violence, which is why Debbie has been a lifelong advocate for keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals. We need her leadership in the Senate to keep our children and communities safe, to defend Social Security and Medicare, and to protect women’s reproductive rights from the hands of extreme Republicans like Rick Scott,” Chairwoman Sánchez continued. “We’re proud to stand with Debbie Mucarsel-Powell in her campaign to represent the people of Florida in the U.S. Senate and to continue fighting alongside her for Latinos across the country.”


“My story is Florida’s story. I came to this country at 14 in search of the American Dream,” said Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. “My mother brought me here so we could live in a country with opportunities for all — and now, I’m running for Senate to make sure that opportunity is there for every Floridian. But Rick Scott only looks out for himself. He’s even trying to raise taxes on our families and wrote a plan to end Social Security and Medicare coverage for seniors like my mom, who we take care of in our home. I’m honored to have BOLD PAC’s endorsement, and together, I know we will stand up for Floridians and defeat Rick Scott.”


DEBBIE MUCARSEL-POWELL

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell came to the U.S. from South America at a young age with her mom and sisters, fleeing violence and searching for a better life. Debbie was raised in Florida and worked at a doughnut shop to help support her family, while her mother worked double shifts as a home-health care provider. After supporting herself through school and college, Debbie worked for Florida International University's Colleges of Health and Medicine, where she led a program to expand access to affordable healthcare to more Floridians.


In 2018, Debbie defeated Carlos Curbelo, a two-term Republican incumbent in Florida’s 26th District and became the first South American immigrant elected to the House. Serving in Congress, Debbie wrote a bill to expand seniors’ Medicare Advantage coverage, fought to provide economic relief to families and small businesses, and secured $200 million for Everglades restoration.


Debbie has been a lifelong advocate for keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals, after tragically losing her father to gun violence when she was 24 years old. 


Now, she is running for the U.S. Senate because Floridians’ basic rights are under attack. Extremist Republican Rick Scott wants to cut Social Security and Medicare coverage, raise taxes for working families, and advance a national abortion ban. Floridians deserve a Senator like Debbie, and our nation needs a second Latina Senator who will fight for our democracy, economy, and our rights.

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell llegó a los Estados Unidos desde Sudamérica a una edad temprana con su madre y sus hermanas, huyendo de la violencia y buscando una vida mejor.
