Luz Rivas is an engineer, educator and public servant from the San Fernando Valley. A child of immigrants, Luz understands the struggles everyday Americans face. That's why she's fighting to ensure that every American has the
opportunity to learn, prosper, and succeed.
Luz Rivas has dedicated her professional career fighting to ensure that every Californian has the
opportunity to learn, prosper, and succeed.
Elected to the State Assembly in 2018, Rivas served as Chair of the Assembly Committee on
Natural Resources and currently serves on the Assembly Committees on Budget; Revenue and
Taxation; and Communications and Conveyance. She has written and passed legislation to help
protect workers from extreme heat, provide services for homeless youth, and prevent plastic
pollution. She brought $10 million to create a Regional STEM Institute at Los Angeles Mission
College.
Prior to her service in the Assembly, Rivas founded DIY (Do it Yourself) Girls, a non-profit
organization dedicated to helping girls in the San Fernando Valley become interested in math and
science. The organization has helped set thousands of young women on the path towards economic
empowerment, independence, and self-confidence.
Luz was raised in the San Fernando Valley by a single mother who cleaned bathrooms at a local
hospital. Initially, the family rented a room in a house, and later lived in a converted garage and back
houses throughout the Valley.
As a 5th grader, Luz became interested in technology and engineering, she enrolled in a state
program that helped students excel in math and science and go on to college in these fields. Luz
ultimately graduated from MIT with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and then received a Masters
of Education from Harvard University.
