WASHINGTON — Governor Gavin Newsom has shown tremendous leadership navigating a global pandemic, unprecedented wildfires, an uncertain economic recovery, and constant hostility by the Trump Administration. Now, the Governor faces one of the most consequential responsibilities before any statewide executive -- appointing a successor to serve the remainder of Senator Kamala Harris’ term.
BOLD PAC, the campaign arm of the Hispanic Caucus, urges Governor Newsom to appoint Secretary of State Alex Padilla as Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ successor in the U.S. Senate. If appointed, Alex Padilla would be the first Latino in history to represent California in the United States Senate.

— BOLD PAC, the campaign arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, is urging Newsom to appoint Secretary of State Alex Padilla as Harris’ successor. “Latinos make up forty-percent of the state of California, make countless contributions to its economy, its history and culture, and yet the state has never been represented by a Latino voice in the U.S. Senate,’’ said Rep. Tony Cárdenas, the organization’s chair, in a statement. “With the success of the Biden-Harris campaign, we have the opportunity and obligation to change that.”
The San Fernando Valley Democrat said Newsom must consider Padilla, who “would serve in the U.S. Senate with the same work ethic, integrity, and selflessness that defined his time in the Los Angeles City Council, California’s State Senate, and most recently as California's Secretary of State, where he protected voting rights.”
Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, in a pitch to Newsom this week obtained by POLITICO, made a case for Padilla as a historic figure who would represent California’s largest electorate.
“As the first Mexican-American woman elected to Congress , I understand what it means to break barriers and how critical it is for diverse communities to have a seat at the decision-making table,’’ she wrote. “With Alex in the U.S. Senate, all Californians, including Latino and immigrant communities, will have someone who understands the challenges many of our families face, because he’s lived them.”
